Gut repair supplements - bugs, bugs, bugs

After my first nutritionists appointment for food allergy and coeliac disease, I was sent the first round of supplements to help repair my gut and so moderate my over-active immune response.

The aim is to re-build the paste layer in the gut that has been damaged due to the immune response to gluten caused by coeliac disease.

Now I've been taking a pro-biotic supplement for a while, and I thought I was doing my bit for my intestinal flora, but boy was I wrong. Instead of a single pill every morning, I'm now swallowing 10 bugs for every person on the planet - every day.

This is what I've got to take...

Gut repair supplements - professional probiotics

Lactobacillus GG - 1 capsule per day
Lactobacillus L plantarum / rhamnosus / salivarius - 2 capsules per day
Saccharomyces boulardii - 1 capsule per day
Bifidobacterium bifidum (powder) - 1 tsp per day

Total organisms - 80 billion !

I'm continuing most of my allergy supplements along with this, so I've had to give up work to find enough time to count out and swallow my pills. ;-)

The only other thing the nutritionist sent me was an oil with a 4:1 Omega 6 to Omega 3 ratio. I've to take one desertspoon of that a day.

So there you have it - the first wave of gut repair supplements. I'll keep you posted about results.

  • Hi, I sympathize with you. I get to the point where I just physically can not swallow another pill.
Lately I have been doing something new that is helping me more than any probiotic ever has before.
I make kraut at home, and eat a small amount with every meal. You might look into this, there are many other ways of getting culture besides store-bought probiotics. I read that probiotics are fine for well people, but people like us need billions more of very vigorously growing bacteria. The people of olden days all ate cultured foods every day. Nowadays everything is pasteurized, so all culture is killed.
    Good health to you

  • Hi Robin

The kraut sounds interesting - how do you make it? It seems as if these pro-biotics may not be agreeing with me completely, so I may need another option.

    All the best
